Legacies Are Built, Not Left
Last week, Team BEAST achieved their annual team mission. Watching from the sidelines, I couldn’t be more proud.
Before my retirement from the Iowa Army National Guard in October 2024, people often asked me, “Do you think Team BEAST will still perform at the highest caliber once you’re gone?” My response was always the same: ABSOLUTELY.
Why? Because Team BEAST has never been about one person. It’s about a group of professionals bound together by a shared vision and a mission: changing lives, one person at a time.
Their continued success is living proof of what I wrote about in Chapter 11 of Beyond The Call: The Team BEAST Leadership Blueprint:
I am incredibly proud of 1SG Austin Roberts and every single member of Team BEAST for carrying forward that spirit, working together, advancing the mission, and giving their very best every day.
The lesson is clear: true leadership isn’t about creating followers; it’s about building teams that thrive long after you’ve stepped away. Team BEAST is thriving because they understand the power of working together. As Sam Walton said,
“We’re all working together, that’s the secret.”
My hope is that this example inspires you in your own life and work. Build your legacy not by chasing titles, but by investing in people, shaping culture, and daring greatly to step into the arena.
Because in the end, the impact you leave isn’t in what you say, it’s in the lives you’ve touched, the teams you’ve built, and the mission you’ve carried forward.
Legacies are built. Keep building.
